Back to School 2017 with Momtrends!

Back to School 2017!The Mint Chip Mama Back to School 2017 - Momtrends

I’m not sure how the summer is almost over already and we are talking about school again. The good news is – for us moms who live vicariously through our children – we can still share in the excitement of new products! As a blogger I’m so lucky to be invited to fun events like the Momtrends Back to School Bash that took place last week in Manhattan. Without further ado, I present to you – fun Back to School items for your 2017 school year!

The Mint Chip Mama Back to School 2017 - MomtrendsI love when brands from overseas come to the US and still maintain their country’s look. Orchestra French Fashion for Kids does just this. With great quality and even better prices (omg! the sales they’re running right now!) you can dress your child like a little croissant, setting them apart from their friends. Chock full of tons of choices, my favorite was this super soft Junior shirt that knots in the front. I’m excited to use the $100 gift certificate I won to outfit my kids… and maybe myself too!

My kids happen to LOVE raisins. They also happen to love watermelon. When I saw these cute packaged Raisels I knew they’d be in heaven. Raisels are sour, fruit-flavored golden raisins grown in California and infused with 100% RDI of Vitamin C. They were so delicious I couldn’t stop thinking about them. I was excited to watch my daughter’s face the next day when she tried them. She loved them as much as I had expected! Individually packaged and so eye popping Raisels are a great addition to any lunch bag.

Of course you can’t talk about Back to School without actual school products. I LOVED these bluetooth emoji speakers and lipstick highlighters from Staples. I also love this shark backpack and matching folder. It’s the perfect size for my son entering pre-K.

The ever evolving American Girl world is moving on up with the ages with this new set of Smart Girl’s Guides including A Smart Girl’s Guide: Drama, Rumors & Secrets: Staying True to Yourself in Changing Times and A Smart Girl’s Guide to Liking Herself, Even on the Bad Days. These books seem appealing not only to the pre and pre, pre teens but should be mandatory reading for some of their mothers too (oops! did I say that?).

My baby loved these new snacks from Nosh and I LOVED the packaging. Look at these faces! How can you say no to those faces? All of their munchables are made with all natural, certified organic ingredients (like premium Japonica Rice) in fun, foodie flavors (like beet & strawberry). Their website has a great feature to find out the right product for your needs.

Another delicious brand, Kite Hill, was both new to me and an immediate favorite. All of their dairy free products were DELICIOUS with their cream cheese style spread being my favorite. Like I want to rub it on my face good. Even more exciting to the fans who flocked the table were the yogurt tubes (above) that were making their public debut! Coming to stores at the end of August, these almond milk yogurts are not to be missed.

We were lucky enough to have a patch bar waiting for us from Twelve Little – a great bag company with all kinds of beautiful coordinating items. I of course picked the pizza patch. This large, insulated lunch bag will be a great addition to our school bag army.

One of the most creative displays was from Name Bubbles. Set up like a large lost and found, they had items in a big bin that we had to look through to find which one was ours. Not only did I “lose” this great mint water bottle, I “found” this awesome unicorn name label! Clearly these tie-dye labels are my favorite, but I have to admit I LOVE these personalized wall decals even more!

If your mornings are anything like mine (read: hectic) you may also be excited to see these Morning Rounds from Ozery Bakery. With fun flavors like cranberry orange your french toast can get to the next level. Even better for my crew are the One Bun rounds for our pizza making nights. Pizza patch… pizza making… Do you see a pattern?

Hand washing and smelling nice are two things not to be missed when starting a new year. I was excited to get some new Bath & Body Works products to try. Their foaming soaps are some of my favorites. Extra credit here for the mint flavor!

I don’t actually know if this product was a fun add on to Raisels or something for us to learn about but I literally screamed when I saw it. As a HUGE fan of the often hard to find collapsible lunch container I freaked out to find this in my hands. Go Raisels!

As we all know school is demanding and it is so important that our kids take a break to play every now and then. These games from Hasbro – like Mouse Trap, Cranium Sculpt-it, or one of my all time favorites – Perfection – will give them the break they need. I love finding pockets of time to play games with my kids. Not always easy with crazy schedules, and you know – general exhaustion, but sitting and playing games is something we all love.

And there you have it! Fun products, delicious food, new companies, what more could we as Moms want for the new school year? Except maybe a few more hours in our day…!

Happy Back to Schooling!

Shoe’re The One That I Want Oh Oh Oh. The One I Need. Oh Yes In Deed. Day 20 of My Favorite Things: Stride Rite

Day 20 of My Favorite Things: Stride Rite

New shoes and back to school go hand in hand for me. I remember with such happiness going to Stride Rite with my mom at the end of every summer to pick out new shoes. I can vividly see the store if I close my eyes. Mr. Seymour would be our guy – we’d wait for him if he was busy (in fact – I think he took care of my mom’s feet when she was little too). There was a little play area to keep me occupied, a mural on the wall, shelves upon shelves of shoes and that little inclined bench that he would sit on to measure my foot, put on the new shoe, and tie it up. I cannot remember what I ate for breakfast today but I remember every aspect of this as clear as day.

When my daughter started walking I wanted to continue in the Stride Rite wearing family tradition. Poor Mr. Seymour would have been about 150 by this time, and the original location we patronized was closed, but luckily there was another location not too far away. I was so excited to walk my little baby in holding her hand for a proper fitting (that is why you go to Stride Rite – the sales people are properly trained to fit your child – and their knowledge on the product always impresses me. You feel like you are buying a shoe from someone selling you the correct shoe – not just any shoe). With pride my mom bought my twelve month old daughter her first pair of Stride Rite shoes – the Stride Rite SRT Emilia (oh shoot – I’m crying).

My daughter outside of Stride Rite wearing her first pair of shoes – February 19, 2011

It was so much fun seeing my baby toddle around in these little white shoes. As her foot grew we tried all of Stride Rite‘s different styles of sneakers and when each summer rolled around we bought her the new version of the amphibious Liddie and the dressier Hazel sandals. Both closed toed. Both adorable. Both shoes she could eventually put on herself.

I will only buy shoes for her at Stride Rite. I think it is so important to have a good supportive shoe for my incredibly active kid to wear. My strategy each season is to stock up when they have a good sale – which luckily coincides with when she needs new shoes! For example – from now until September 2nd Stride Rite’s Back to School Buy One Get One 40% off sale is running (with lots of support, no less – ha ha).

You can imagine how excited I was when I got a sneak peek of the Stride Rite fall collection at the Momtrends Back to School Event a few months ago. I (uh – I mean my daughter) HAD to have the Stride Rite SRT Preschool Lydia. This specific style of shoe has been a favorite of ours and when I saw the updated version with the super jazzy purple and pink sequins – OMG, it was like the shoe design fairy made these with my daughter in mind. I love that this shoe is super girly and glitzy on top of an amazingly supportive sneaker. Very often you get the glitz or the support. In this shoe there was – say it with me – synergy. Or would it be Shoenrgy? (sorry). Her mouth dropped open when she opened the box. Immediately followed by “I love these shoes. They are amazing! I love them so much. Thank you Mama”. Happy mama, happy kid. What more do you need?

Back to School shopping is so much fun. When you couple it with a product that not only means something to you from when you were younger, but also provides your child with a great foundation – or should I say footdation (again, sorry) you’ve got yourself an ace in the hole.

As an added bonus if you have small feet like me then the “and Get One 40% off” can be for you… Oh you have cute shoes that are super supportive, fit perfectly, are cheaper in children’s sizes and I can buy them right here, right now? Sold. We call that “efficient shopping” in my house. Plus it doesn’t count if you buy shoes for yourself in a children’s store, right? If you use the $5 coupon on the receipt from completing the survey online and the coupon you get from accruing points from their Rewards program, it’s really like you are saving money by buying yourself shoes. That’s like losing weight by eating ice cream. I want to live in that world.

Thank you Stride Rite for not only introducing me to great shoes in 1979 but for staying true to your roots and being around 30+ years later so I can buy your shoes for my children. You have become one of my favorite things (and my mother’s and my daughter’s)!

Here are some tips from Stride Rite that will help you on your back to school shoe shopping trip:

• Shoe shopping should always be done later in the afternoon or evening, since feet swell over the course of the day.

• With the rate children outgrow shoes, it’s probably tempting to buy shoes that are too big, but shoes that are too big can cause a child to trip and develop footproblems.

• It’s recommended to switch between at least two pairs of shoes to avoid wear and tear and maintain support – they will last longer.

• As adults, we often say we’re “breaking in” a pair of shoes – this is not smart for anyone, especially for kids. Shoes need to be immediately comfortable – don’t allow for a breaking in period or expect shoes to get more comfortable over time – they need to fit and feel good now.

• Hand me downs might save money but they are not good for your kids feet. Old shoes lose support from wear and tear and sharing shoes can spread foot and nail fungus. It’s best to start off each season with a new pair of comfortable shoes in their new and right size.

*GIVEAWAY* Stride Rite has offered to give away a pair of shoes to one lucky reader!

What is your favorite shoe buying experience? Did you save up for a pair of red bottomed fancy heels, or do you remember your back to school shoe ritual like me?

Winner will be chosen Thursday, August 28th.

Here is a little more on Stride Rite because as you know – I LOVE learning about the heritage of brands:

In 1919 Jacob Slosberg and partner Philip Green started the Green Shoe Manufacturing Co. The quality children’s shoe manufacturer, specializing in stitchdown shoes, operates out of a converted stable in Boston, MA. In 1937 the name Stride Rite shoes is applied to every pair.

During World War II, Green Shoe worked with the U.S. Army to develop a nurse’s field boot and produced thousands of pairs of WAC boots.

In 1986 Stride Rite succeeds in banning smoking of cigarettes, cigars and pipes from Stride Rite workplaces, a rare effort among corporations of the time.

Stride Rite currently offers 400 different styles. They pride themselves in their sales associates who are trained to get you to find your size and get the right fit. The shoes feature breathable materials like leather; many with anti-stink linings. The soles are sturdy, lightweight and flexible for comfort – giving mom piece of mind. Stride Rite also offers a full line of uniform friendly shoes.

Gonna Make You Sweat-shirt, Baby. Day 13 of My Favorite Things: Fruit of the Loom

Day 13 of My Favorite Things: Fruit of the Loom

Best Fleece Hoodie Zip_Blackl

As I’ve mentioned before – Back to School shopping was something I looked forward to for months when I was younger. Even the little stuff – like new underwear, undershirts, even socks were exciting to me. There’s something about buying new socks that I think is romantic. Maybe it’s the hope that they will stay with their sole mates forever… reinforcing the idea of love (Oh, just go with it).

One of my favorite things to buy was always a new sweatshirt. I remember vividly getting Champion sweatshirts (heavy weight AND light weight), bedazzled 90210 sweatshirts, zipper sweatshirt, whatever the styles were at the time. A new sweatshirt always felt like a big deal to me. Maybe because it was a tangible item one thought of on those nights when the summer was winding down and there was a chill in the air. Maybe because it went over stuff so it could be used all the time instead of just in a shirt rotation. Who knows, but I always loved me some good sweatshirts. Sadly this love affair was abandoned after a very messy breakup between me and a zippered Michigan sweatshirt I splurged on my senior year (which I found out years later I left at my cousin’s house and he refused to return it because they had started their own love affair). Fourteen years later – my wounds finally healed as I was given a chance for renewal. She doesn’t have a name but she is black, soft, hooded, tailored, and has a media pocket! Yep – an extra pocket within the pocket just for one’s phone. Pretty 22nd century Fruit of the Loom!

Last November, a few weeks after having my son I snuck away for a Momtrends event to celebrate the holidays. One of the giveaways was this new sweatshirt. I was skeptical how exciting a sweatshirt could be. A woman scorned. The wounds were still fresh – all these years later. I played along halfheartedly. They let me choose from tons of colors and sizes until I settled on “boring” black. I filled out my form and forgot about it. Too painful. Too painful. Too soon.

A few weeks later, my new sweatshirt arrived. It sat on a chair for a few weeks. It wasn’t so jazzy – so I thought. Then one day I was a bit cold. I needed a – guess what!? Nope, I needed a blanket. So I put a blanket over me and looked at the chair. I waved. She waved. It was brief. I was still cold. I wished there was something to make myself warmer – hmmmm… (Cut me some slack. My brain was mush. I had a baby five minutes ago). My eyes searched the room. They stopped. They met. Eye to eyelet. We smiled for a few minutes. I didn’t want to get up. I looked away. We were slow to warm up to each other. Finally I got up. I walked past, said hello. Nothing big. A simple flirtation. I got a chill. We started talking. We decided to try each other out. I put her on. DONE. She was soft, cozy, fitted. We became inseparable. The rest as they say – is history.

The happy couple.

As you start or continue your back to school shopping – pick up this sweatshirt for yourself. Treat yourself. It’s not a new handbag or fancy shoes. Your friends won’t be dying for details. You don’t really have to justify it because it’s – a sweatshirt. But it will make you happy. You will not regret it! I mean it has a pocket for your phone IN another pocket. A little more on it – Fruit of the Loom has transformed the fabric to reduce heaviness without sacrificing softness and warmth, reduced fullness in the sleeve for additional comfort and fit, and made the drawstrings flat and shorter.

While you are in the store trying YOUR new sweatshirt on, check out Fruit of the Loom‘s other great items for those little people that follow you around. For back to school, they have some great new combo packs with bonus items. The perfect way to get your little ones ready – but also for men and women. I love that each pack has at least seven of the item so you are set for the week!
